CTO participants are required to complete at least 20 hours of community service targeting an issue of concern to youth and their community. These are just a small sample of the kinds of projects CTO students envision and implement:

The 11th grade CTO club of New World High School volunteered for Homes for the Homeless (HFH), an organization whose mission is to provide homeless families with the opportunities and support necessary to move out of shelter and live independently.  CTO students organized a Halloween party for the homeless youth and collected new and gently used toys, wrapped the toys, and donated them to the children at HFH.

As Jasmine Acosta, their facilitator recounted, “The students worked very hard in promoting the toy drive at their school,  creating flyers and a donation box which they decorated with festive holiday colors. Before going to donate the gently used toys, the students cleaned and nicely wrapped each gift so the children would have a great experience when opening them.

On the day of the donation, the children were very happy to see our group and posed for pictures while enthusiastically opening their presents. Our students were able to spend time playing with the children and their newly donated toys before having to say our goodbyes.

Overall it was an experience I personally would never forget!”
